Background Design

Before

When it came to the backgrounds, I wanted to give them a more tactile feel and so I decided to paint them traditionally. On the whole, I wanted the film to look like it was a a traditional painting or sketch come to life. This method of doing the backgrounds helped to bring this vision to life.

I initially used Gouache paint to draw 12 backgrounds for this film. The before slideshow shows a preview of 5 of these backgrounds.

After

After I painted these backgrounds, I then scanned them and then then I used a digital drawing programme to add any effects or outcomes that I wanted that couldn't be done traditionally. This includes effects such as blurring, adding hazes or things like blades of grass.

You can view those same 5 backgrounds here, after they've been digitally altered. These are some of the final backgrounds that I have used in the film.
